Blog: The Case and Need for Mass Timber

The 2024 Mass Timber Roadmap is out now and makes the case and outlines the need for mass timber in Canada.

The Mass Timber Roadmap takes the position that to build a world-class mass timber industry, Canada needs to adopt a strategic approach to the use of its forestry resources. Canada needs to treat its forests as a national resource that can add value to the economy, rather than a commodity-based, volume-driven approach. Mass timber presents a uniquely valuable opportunity because it can:

  1. Help address Canada’s housing crisis by reducing construction times by as much as 20%.
  2. Drive economic activity and create jobs in rural and Indigenous communities.
  3. Meet important climate objectives by reducing the carbon intensity of construction and providing long term carbon storage.

The mass timber industry is ready to scale, after more than a decade of hard work and dedication in demonstrating the value and potential of this industry. To date, mass timber construction has achieved these significant milestones:

  • Almost 700 mass timber buildings have been completed in Canada.
  • More than140 projects are under construction or in the planning stages.

Canada has excellent wood resources and expertise all along the supply chain. As the demand for mass timber beams, panels, and buildings is strong and continues to grow, we need to adopt a strategic approach to our national resource that can boost our economy, build more homes and reduce our environmental impact.

However, to compete globally, we need to create an efficient, integrated forest-to-buildings value chain. And time is the most important factor. Canada needs net-zero building solutions and green jobs that a rapidly growing mass timber industry will bring to communities across Canada.
