Blog: National Forest Week 2024

Each year, National Forest Week is held in the fourth week of September to raise awareness about the role this valuable and renewable resource plays in our culture, economy, history, traditions and future.

And Canada is recognized as a global leader in how we sustainably manage this incredible resource. Communities, families and individuals in Canada are all deeply connected to forests — with many depending on forests for their livelihood and way of life. We are proud to be part of the Canadian forestry story.

Did You Know?

  • Canada is home to some of the world's largest and most diverse forests, covering over 367 million hectares of land.
  • Less than 1% of Canadian forests designated for harvesting are harvested each year, and all forests harvested on public land are required by law to be regenerated with Canadian Foresters planting between 400-600 million seedlings every year.
  • Canada is home to some of the world's largest and most diverse forests, covering over 367 million hectares of land. These forests can be a considerable climate change assets — whether serving as a critical carbon sink or providing the sustainably-sourced, renewable products we need to reduce our carbon footprint, our forests have a critical role to play in our collective fight against climate change.

Last week, voices from across the forestry sector converged in Ottawa at the annual National Forest Policy Conference on September 18, 2024, to discuss how we can unlock the full potential of Canadian forestry. In addition to keynotes from stakeholders and experts in forestry innovation, Indigenous partnerships, government, polling and policy, the conference will also highlight global opportunities and Canada’s natural market advantage in sustainable forestry. Stay tuned for highlights from this year’s conference.

You can show your appreciation for our forests this week by emailing your MP, calling on them to enact policies that can help keep our forests as forests forever.
